Coaching skills for better conversations

When I first started training as a coach, I was excited by the potential I saw in using coaching skills as a way of improving our conversations with the people in our lives. Whether it’s in our private lives with friends and families or at work with colleagues, coaching skills are key leadership skills that help us navigate towards a shared purpose. So, next time you go into a conversation try this out:

💗 Feel your intention - What’s my deeper intention here? What do I wish for myself? For the other person? For the relationship between us?

⛰ Do what you need to get present - whether it’s feeling your feet on the ground, looking them in the eye, sharing what’s on your mind… notice what it is for you.

🌀 Get to know what distracts you – whether it’s the environment you are in or your beliefs about who you or the other person should be, thinking about a response to what the other person is saying…. See if you can let what distracts you go as it arises and shift your attention back to the other person.

👧🏻 Be totally curious and make no assumptions - What is completely obvious to you might not be so obvious to them or might look very different from their perspective. Ask with total curiosity to create a shared understanding.

Let me know what you noticed when trying this out and do share your own tips for great conversations ;)
